To help meet this goal, we conduct stream surveys,
habitat preservation and improvement, and education programs. We hope
that the forested streams on the low slopes of southern New England will
become viable again for the life and reproduction of its native brookies. Over
recent years, volunteers from our Chapter, have collected voluminous
data on hundreds of stream "crossings" (over paths, under bridges,
through culverts, etc.). The information, we hope, will be used
to remove impediments to trout and other creatures that travel through
the many small streams and the main rivers they feed.
Additional projects have included building fences to inhibit horse riding,
regular path and roadside cleanups, petitioning and testifying at regulation
hearings, and working with the state's Department of Environmental Management
to make its stocking programs as consistent as possible with the conservation
goals of Trout Unlimited.
